Mona Delatore was so energized to be teaching. It was her first year, and she had been fortunate to get hired quickly and easily. So many of her friends were still substitute teaching this first year. She knew when she started her college program that focusing on math would give her an edge since so many districts were struggling to find qualified applicants with mathematics backgrounds. She had done her research, and it had paid off. Yes, she was putting in some long days in her attempt to conquer the entire world, but she was just so excited to finally have a job and wanted to be great.

Mona's current challenge was to develop a strong test for the end of her pre-algebra, chapter one test. It was the beginning of the second semester, and she had a new unit to teach. She felt good about the instruction that she had prepared for the pre-algebra unit, but she was struggling with the assessment. She knew from her undergraduate training that good assessment tools were important to good teaching. She wanted the test to be both easy to read and a good evaluation of student learning. With this test, she also wanted to monitor closely which mathematics topics she was covering so that she didn't focus too exclusively on one topic.

One of Mona's students was a little girl named Brianna. Brianna had a learning disability that included language processing. Math was difficult for her, but Brianna's intelligence scores put her at an average level with other students her age. Mona is concerned about her students' success and is working to make a fair and valid test to assess all of her students.
